Plastic Straws

Some straws are actually made from plastics that can be recycled (like polypropylene), but due to them being ‘contaminated’ with food, they are usually consigned to landfill, or incineration.

Plus, as they are light, they are easily blown around and lost in coastal environments, where they can wreak havoc to marine wildlife through fragmenting and being eaten. Brighton, our home city, has a rich and vibrant seafront economy of bars, cafes, restaurants and hotels – so this is why straws are the first Plastic Free Pledge target.
